A 5-minute rotation was chosen in order to limit energy consumption: it would have required 25 times more energy for a one-minute rotation. The name 1847 MC is a nod to the year the Maison was founded. In reality, the rack placed at the edge of the sapphire disk transforms it into a gear wheel. The whole thing thus appears to be levitating. Patented in 2013, the Mysterious Double Tourbillon plays on a double illusion: not only does the flying tourbillon complete a full rotation within 60 seconds (like in a classic construction) but the sapphire disk holding the tourbillon turns on itself every five minutes - all without any visible connection to a gear-train. These discs, activated by the movement, turn the hands – one for the minutes hand and the other for the hours hand. The movement operates at 4Hz with about 2 days of power reserve. The movement, unfortunately, isn’t visible through a caseback window though that might have been a really nice touch. A few years ago, Bulgari decided to become a leader in ultra-thin watches, and had no choice but to develop a number of in-house movements to achieve this goal. The heartbeat of the Pasha, visible through its sapphire crystal caseback, comes courtesy of the 1847 MC automatic caliber, which offers resistance to both water and magnetism. Inside the new generation Santos W2SA0006 is the in-house made Cartier caliber 1847 MC automatic mechanical movement. They are attached to two sapphire discs fitted with teeth around the edge. To explore what this looks like in practice, let’s look at the Bulgari caliber BVL 138 and the Cartier caliber 1847 MC. These complications appear suspended in mid-air as the hands are not directly connected to the movement. The power reserve time of the automatic movement, which operates at a frequency of 4Hz (28.800vph), is set to 40 hours. The Mysterious Hour's display reinterprets the concept of the first iconic mysterious clocks by Cartier watchmaking by rendering it miniature to the scale of a watch. The Caliber 1847 MC, which we saw in the Cl de Cartier model family, which was first introduced in 2015, was used in the new model. The first Mysterious clock, named Modèle A, took its inspiration from the clocks of the famous illusionist and father of modern magic, Jean-Eugène Robert-Houdin. The watch comes on a black calfskin strap with a triple-adjustable folding clasp it retails for 7,600. Iconic in Cartier's watchmaking history, the Mysterious movement was created in 1912 after a meeting between Louis Cartier and watchmaker Maurice Coüet. The watch is outfitted with Cartier’s in-house, automatic Caliber 1847 MC, which has a power reserve of 42 hours.
